Mandela is a former state representative in Wisconsin who grew up in the most incarcerated and poorest ZIP codes in the country. As a state representative, Mandela was a champion of criminal justice reform, racial justice, and health care in Wisconsin. He has been recognized by numerous publications as a progressive champion to watch. The Nation recognized him as one of the top progressives that they are watching in the 2018 midterms. Mandela has been endorsed by Moms Demand Action as a "Gun Sense Candidate of Distinction." He has been working across the Deep South and the rest of the country to fight back against the regressive conservative agenda of ALEC. He is on the front lines, working with state advocacy groups and state legislators to push progressive policies.

"Mandela Barnes brings two key ingredients to the mix unmatched by any other candidate. He is first a public servant of proven competence. Second, in a state plagued by racially divisive mythologies and an absence of mainstream role models for youth of color, Mandela can encourage an entire generation and add another measure of pride to a slighted and disenfranchised community." —John from Algoma
