Carolyn Long grew up in a rural community on the coast. Carolyn’s mother worked as a waitress, and her father worked a variety of odd jobs before opening his small business, John’s Fresh Produce. The margins were slim, and to help the family out, Carolyn started working at the store at the age of twelve along with her sister and three brothers. To help pay for college, Carolyn started working at Safeway, eventually becoming a produce department manager. As a proud journeyman with UFCW Local 555, she earned enough to pay her way through the University of Oregon. She then attended graduate school at Rutgers University. Carolyn started working at WSU Vancouver in 1995. She has worked there ever since, as a tenured professor and in several administrative and leadership positions. She is dedicated to helping the next generation of young people get the opportunities and skills they need to succeed. For 22 years, SW Washington’s young leaders have taken her classes in American Institutions, Public Law, American Public Policy, and Public Civility.
