Luz is an education advocate and public servant dedicated to ensuring every Californian has the opportunity to learn. After earning a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master's of education from Harvard, she returned to the San Fernando Valley and started a nonprofit focused on helping girls become interested in math and science, called D.I.Y. Girls. The nonprofit she founded has gone on to work with more than 2,000 girls since 2012 and helped them develop skills as engineers and designers. It has organized workshops and other events for hundreds of women throughout Los Angeles, providing them with the opportunity to learn new skills and connect with leaders in science and technology. Luz recently won a special election to fill the Assembly seat and will be running for a full term in November.

“She seems to be 'one of us' normal people. She seems to understand the real struggles that families face on an everyday basis, and she will also understand the change that can happen when one person believes in you."–Consuelo from North Hollywood
